Frank Yerby was a popular American writer, best known for his 1946 historical novel The Foxes of Harrow, which was the first novel written by an African-American to become a best seller
Yerby was originally noted for writing romance novels set in the Antebellum South. In mid-century, Yerby began writing a series of best-selling historical novels ranging from The Athens the of the Pericles to Europe to the dark ages. Yerby took considerable pains in research and often footnoted his historical works. In all, he wrote 42 novels. Many which have been translated into several different languages.
Dahomey was a small country in West Africa. Dahomey no longer exists. Is it is now Benin. The Dahomey captured other rival tribes of Africans to be sold as slaves unknowing that the slave traders they were selling to, were vastly different than their own African customs.
The novel focuses on Nyasanu, a towering protagonist, meaning "man among men" although it should really mean "man among women" since Nyasanu ends up with more wives than he can handle and is eventually betrayed and shipped off to America as a slave.
